The Virtual world of Second Life is a world of avatars and virtual landscapes where anything can happen. Whether you’re a student taking online classes or just want to explore this world for fun and various hobbies that you can enjoy with likeminded people. We will show you how to get started with Second Life and some overall basics. There are two account types which are called basic and premium. The basic is the free one; while you have to pay when you upgrade to the premium account. People get around in Second Life with their virtual bodies also known as avatars. You can alter your appearance however you like with a huge amount of options. In Second Life you can walk, run, fly or teleport to different locals. You communicate with others by instant messaging, text, or even voice chat using a microphone. Second Life has its own currency called “Linden Dollars”. Several online resources allow residents to convert Linden Dollars into US Dollars and vice-versa. Rates fluctuate based on supply and demand, but over the last few years they have remained fairly stable at approximately 250 Linden Dollars (L$) to the US Dollar. With that you can purchase cars, houses, clothes, and accessories, you name it. Inside Second Life fellow users run and build everything thus making it that much more user friendly. So now that you have got a quick idea. We will present you with a more step by step method on how to get started in Second Life.

Go to www.SecondLife.com and click the “Get Started!” button.

  1. Choose your avatar name
  2. Choose a last name from the drop down list then type in a first name. Click the check name for availability link to see whether the name you choose is available.
  3. Fill in the rest of the information and be sure to include a valid e-mail address.
  4. Select your initial avatar (you can make changes later so no worries)
  5. Fill in your Real Life information (it’s recommended that you choose a strong password with a mixture of numbers and letters.
  6. Choose the free First Basic account type. (Premium is for initial land owning purposes) You will then see a welcome screen showing you the e-mail address you inputted and that a confirmation was sent.
  7. When you receive the con formation e-mail, click the link to confirm your account. (a window will open up prompting to download the software).
  8. Click the orange download button next to the platform you use. (i.e. Windows, Mac, or Linux).

    1. Choose your download location. after the download completes, double click the program to install it.
    NOTE: For Internet Explorer Click the Save File button to begin the download. When the download is finished you will be prompted to install the software, click yes and the software will begin to install. After the installation is finished you will be prompted to start your program!
